Why your food packaging should be Halal certified

Many assume Halal certification only covers what is inside. But packaging touches the food your customers eat.

Halal certification is often treated as something that only applies to what is inside a product. For modern buyers, auditors and Muslim customers, packaging is part of the same chain.

Packaging touches the food itself

Bags, wraps and primary packaging make direct contact with food - sometimes while it is hot, oily or damp. The materials and additives used to make them are therefore part of the assessment.

What actually gets checked

  • The origin of raw materials and additives, including colourants.
  • Cleanliness of the production process and separation from non-compliant materials.
  • Records that can be traced back, not just verbal assurances.

The point of certification is not the sticker. It is the evidence that all of this can be traced.

Why it matters for your business

  • Modern retail, large distributors and state procurement usually ask for the document before any deal starts.
  • For Muslim customers, this clarity removes doubt before they even ask.
  • During an audit or a complaint you have a document to show, instead of words.

The cheap option that defers the question

Undocumented packaging is cheaper today. The cost shows up later - when a large buyer asks for documents you do not have, or when you must change supplier in the middle of peak season.
